Leeds Library & Information Service uses a variety of ‘Skills for Life’ promotional collections to attract learners into the libraries and to highlight the resources available to them. We have many basic skills classes coming in and we run short-term readers groups. Among the promotions we use are:
With this particular client group, it is essential to display our stock near library entrances and in other easily accessible areas. In the Central Library, the collections are on permanent display in the Bookstop area, generally the first thing you see when you enter. The promotions are attractive and easily recognisable - both important features. It is vital to avoid patronising or stigmatising approaches to stock presentation, and thinking through promotions from a consumer point of view is essential. By buying in some of our promotions from external suppliers and partners we can benefit from that commercial and retail thinking.
Through the promotions we have found it easier to attract classes into the library, since students and tutors alike can see that we have appropriate materials for them. So the display promotions work both ways – they help us attract new readers and classes to the library and they create a much more positive and friendly image of the library among adult learners. They have helped us build strong partnerships with skills for life providers. We are able to offer their students something different which they do not get at college or school. The collections have also been indispensable in promotional visits to colleges and to family and children’s centres. There is nothing more effective for staff to use in class visits than an attractive and appropriate book collection. It breaks the ice and creates a relaxed and positive atmosphere.
The collections help a great deal in encouraging and helping people to read for enjoyment. There are no negative or patronising images associated with these collections, which mean that all readers use them! They are just attractive books for anyone to pick up. Because we are committed to a wide programme of ever changing promotions for all ages, interests, tastes and skills - learners and new readers find their interest level alongside all our readers.
